Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships: The Swiss Confederation awards Government Excellence Scholarships annually to foster international exchange and research cooperation between Switzerland and more than 180 other countries. The bestowing body, the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS), chooses the recipients. The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships are intended for young foreign researchers with a master’s or doctoral degree and foreign artists with a bachelor’s degree.

Types of Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships

1. Research scholarships

The research scholarship (research fellowship, Ph.D., Postdoc) is available to post-graduate researchers in any field (the minimum qualification required is a master’s degree) who intend to come to Switzerland to pursue doctoral or post-doctoral research or studies.

For research or study at all Swiss cantonal universities, universities of applied sciences, the two federal institutes of technology, and the four research institutes, research scholarships are awarded. Only candidates nominated by a faculty member at one of these colleges or universities will be considered.

2. Art scholarships

Art students who desire to pursue an initial master’s degree in the arts in Switzerland may apply for available art scholarships.

Art scholarships are available for study at any Swiss conservatory or art university. This scholarship is only available to students from a select few countries.

Selection Criteria for Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships

Applications are subject to a preliminary review by the relevant national authorities and/or the diplomatic representation of Switzerland. The final decision is made by the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS), which evaluates the shortlisted applications.

The FCS evaluates scholarship applications based on three factors:

  • Candidate Summary
  • the standard of the research project or creative activity
  • Potential synergies and future research collaboration


The FCS is made up of professors from public Swiss universities. Scholarship awards are determined by academic and scientific achievement.
By the end of May 2024, the FCS will designate scholarship recipients for the 2024-25 academic year.
