Scope of British Academy Mid-Career Fellowships

The awards promote public engagement with and comprehension of the humanities and social sciences through the support of outstanding individual researchers and communicators. In addition to publication in the customary academic press and journals, applicants will be required to outline in their proposal specific plans for the dissemination of their research to a broad audience.

Awards will be based on both the quality of the proposed research and the applicant’s ability to communicate with a large audience. Applicants are encouraged to describe how their proposed program will contribute to advances in understanding, including public understanding, and to the identification of appropriate strategic priorities in the social sciences and humanities.

Eligibility Criteria of British Academy Mid-Career Fellowships

  • These Fellowships are awarded to individuals employed at UK universities or other UK higher education institutions, and the Academy is particularly interested in supporting mid-career scholars.

  • In determining eligibility, the Academy will take into account applicants who have had career breaks and eminent academicians without doctorates.
